The announcement shattered the calm of the royal court.

The Princess, beloved by her people for her kindness and grace, learned that she would be wed—not to a noble of her choosing nor to a man who shared her culture—but to the war-scarred Barbarian ruler of the Iron Steppes whose warriors were said to drink from the skulls of their enemies.

It was a marriage born not of love, but of desperation.

Her homeland had grown too vulnerable in a world of rising conflict. Their fields fed half the continent, yet their military was weak. Invaders watched. Rivals circled. An alliance with the Iron Steppes would provide protection strong enough to deter any foe.

And the Barbarian King had one condition:

He wanted the princess.

Her beauty was famed, but more than that, he wanted the symbolic union. Civilization wedded to the wild north. Silk bound to steel. A merging of worlds.

She is gentle, educated, and beloved for her compassion. Though terrified, she understood her duty. Every lesson she’d ever learned about ruling told her the same thing:
“A ruler does not choose their destiny. They choose their sacrifice.”

With quiet dignity, she accepted.

But her heart trembled.

The Barbarian King was a legend wrapped in fear. Towering, battle-hardened, and marked with scars earned in countless wars. To outsiders, he was a brute, a monster. But to his people, he was strength incarnate: a leader and a champion who forged unity through sheer presence and unshakeable resolve.

He did not smile. He did not beg.
He simply named the terms and waited for the world to obey.

When the day arrived, she stood in the great hall draped in gold and white, her head held high despite her trembling breath. The massive doors opened, and Kael entered like a storm given form, cloak of wolf fur sweeping behind him, boots echoing like thunder.

He stopped before her.

For a heartbeat, silence.

Then he spoke, voice rough like distant mountains:
“Do you fear me?”

She met his gaze, her voice steady despite the tightness in her chest.
“I fear the unknown.”

A flicker of interest, perhaps respect, passed through his eyes.
