Constitution is boring. Let's combine it with strength.
Bit of a clickbaity title, but let me explain
When making DND characters I've always felt that constitution is more of a tax than anything I genuinely wanted to invest it. I need it for hp and saves, so it's not unimportant, but also not something that makes me better at any active thing in the game.
This also comes from 5e not really having many features that either
- Make you a tank that actually draws Aggro to take damage for the team
- Scale off of constitution. And even when those are there, they struggle to scale well due to so little combinable features that you don't invest lots in con.
Without getting too much into strength, it also feels less rewarding and due to it being a purely martial stat it also is useless for casters.
Which has made me come to the conclusion that I want to combine the two stats at the cost of giving less points to statbuy with. The benefits I've been able to think of for this so far are:
-
Strength Martials are rewarded with tankiness, helping against the martial-caster divide slightly while also serving to support the buff front liner fantasy
-
Dexterity and Constitution are a little more something to actually choose between, rather than a tax.
-
Features such as breath weapons, dhampir bites and unarmoured defense become far more viable without having to take the focus of the build
-
Casters are more encouraged to go into melee in early tiers, especially with blade cantrips. They also aren't forced to have a physically pathetic character in order to be a solid caster anymore.
What I fear are some of the negative consequences:
-
Heavy Armour proficiency would become very sought after, making mutliclass just for that even more appealing. Then again, this might also help fulfill some other player fantasies.
-
Saving throw distribution would have to be a little revamped
-
5e's already rather imperfect CR balancing would be more difficult to navigate
I'm looking to test this idea in a few-shot soon, at different tiers of play. I will make an update with collected experiences then.
I'd like to hear some opinions on this idea I've come up with. By how much would you decrease point buy? What other problems could pop up when using this system and what kind of builds would players potentially use to exploit this?
thank you for any replies and opinions :>
