I experienced aversive ABA. AMA
I am 22. I was diagnosed with autism at 18 months old. I also have ADHD and OCD but these were only diagnosed in adulthood.
So, for context, ABA or Applied Behavioral Analysis is one the programs used in the support and treatment of autistic children.
The practice is considered controversial, because some older practices focused on making autistic children superficially resemble neurotypical peers rather than teaching helpful skills. When I was younger the focus was more on compliance, and aversive (punishment) techniques were used alongside rewards.
This was done through the school system and my parents were unaware. I received it during my elementary school years. I also received speech therapy. I am willing to answer any questions you may have.
