Has anyone here ever successfully fought an L5 AGI in Ontario?
Hi all. I’m one of many long term tenants in a complex in Ontario who just received a notice of hearing for an L5, based on “extraordinary increase in municipal taxes.” Nowhere on the forms does it indicate how much proposed increase or the what the rent will be starting January 2026. Does anyone know if I have a right to request this info from them under the RTA? They tend to ignore emails we send them.
I’m curious whether anyone here has challenged one of these, and whether it’s something that can be challenged. If you have successfully done so, what evidence was helpful? Did the LTB deny or reduce the proposed increase?
Our complex has long-term maintenance issues (like floods and mice infestations) that have lasted years and repairs that have taken months, some of this work is still incomplete. The units haven’t been updated since 2005. Every tenant in the complex was served with the same notice. I’m hoping to reach out to a community legal clinic, but wanted to ask for any experiences others might’ve had with this, especially with a large property management company. Thank you in advance!
