Another round of my son's severe constipation. They're sending us to a specialist this time
(Basically just a rant, long story)
My son is 2 and has always had problems with constipation and just various tummy issues. When he was 5 months old, he spent 3 weeks straight screaming all night from gas pain. You could hear him gurgling from across the room. He couldn't even fart it out. I finally switched him to Nutramigen and it stopped after a couple days. He did Nutramigen until a year when we switched to lactose free, but he's not a big milk boy and really only drinks it in his cereal.
When he was 7ish months old, he was passing hard poops constantly and would bleed every time. He didn't poop for 8 days and it took 3 enemas to get him moving.
Then a couple months ago (right after turning 2), he spent 10 hours in the ER for constipation so severe his body literally stopped producing urine. Not that the urine was blocked, he was simply not making it. The craziest part? I had no idea he was constipated. Why? Because he was still pooping every day. Soft poop too, not pebbles or rocks. We went to the mountains for the weekend and while we were gone he started getting really crabby, crying constantly, refused to eat at all even cookies. He started developing rashes as we were heading back to town. We realized the next day that he hadn't peed in...since the cabin. Still little spots of rashes, still not eating, but drinking ok. I made an appointment for him but an hour later he started vomiting and I took him to the ER. They didn't care that he hadn't peed in 24 hours, said he had a virus, and sent us away. A few hours later I took him to a different ER. They did an ultrasound on his bladder and found it almost empty. X-ray of his stomach and realized he was constipated. 36 hours of no urine, 2 IV bags, multiple rounds of adult laxative, a suppository, and a massive enema...and he still didn't really poop, just a bit of colored splash back from tbe enema. But he peed a little and they sent us home after 10 hours in the ER.
He almost had to go back the next day for dehydration but the Pedialyte started to kick in. The next two weeks were full of laxatives and suppositories. An urgent care trip and X-ray revealed he was still constipated but less so. We kept working and finally got it cleared.
That was 3 months ago. Over the last 1.5ish weeks, I've been seeing the signs that it's happening again. He's been getting daily Pedialax, fiber gummies, lots of berries and P fruits, oat meal, flax seeds, chia (soaked), laxative (which didn't work). He still poops, same as before but it's back to the thick paste how it was last time (last poop 3 days ago). He's only had 3 light pee diapers in the last 48 hours but is still drinking and showing no signs of dehydration (same as before)
I took him back in to the pediatrician but there's nothing they can really do without sending him back to the ER which I will probably have to do. We got an order for another tummy X-ray on stand by but we haven't done it yet since there's not much point as it only confirms what we already knows. They are also referring us to pediatric gastroenterology at a hospital in another town. There's just no normal reason this keeps happening and to the level it's happening. Like... there's no reason a toddler should be so constipated that their kidneys just decide to not make urine anymore.
I have no idea what the problem could be or how long this referral will take. It sucks knowing that another ER trip is in our future within the next day or so. He was so scared from the last time, it took weeks for me to be able to even change his diaper without him panicking that I was going to do something to him 😩
