Component Wear/Damage replacement concern

DISCUSSION

I got to see the video on engineering, and the lifespan of components. They made it pretty clear, your components max health goes down after damage (tier injury for components), and they will wear out over time. You won't be able to fix permanently damaged components, nor worn, they will NEED to be replaced. They even said you will want to probably carry spares. While this works for some ships, as you can buy the components, you won't be able to buy all of them. Also, it's going to be a MASSIVE time sink if you have multiple ships you operate regularly, flying around to buy them.

What about our stock stealth ships, that run Grade A components, our military component equipped ships, and our capitals? Many of the capitals and such have their components locked, and the components are NOT for sale. For most of the Grade A's, the only way to get them right now is by looting them from Hathor facilities, Contested Zones, and the Vanduul Smuggler bases. Since it's a toss up as to what you'll get, it's going to be a massive time sink to try and find the components, or pay highway robbery prices to other players (and potentially get scammed, or pay and get shot and the components stolen back...).

For those that can be bought, even for some ships, you have to visit multiple shops to buy all the components needed. This is going to be a big waste of time depending on how fast components wear out. Before components started persisting, to equip my main ships I used every patch took 2 hours of flying around Stanton. This is contrary to what they said in the video, that they want to enhance our experience, and not detract heavily from gameplay.

I have 2 suggestions for fixing the issue:

  1. Make all components available from at least the capital city shops (Area 18, Crusader, Lorville, New Babbage, Levski, Checkmate and the other "main" stations in pyro) so we can at least go in and buy what we need.

  2. Add in a "service" in the landing menu. Similar to the "repair" but instead of fixing damage, it would "service" our components returning them to full capacity. Make this a charge dependent on the health/wear level of the component. Service could take a little longer "Thank you for choosing New Babbage for your ship's service, please store your vehicle, your service will take X time." It should be less than a claim. This will need to balance with the cost of claims too, as if it's cheaper to claim, why service...

The other thing that should be considered, if it hasn't been... What do we do with our old components? The game tends to struggle when there are a lot of entities (looking at you Levski with your hundreds of NPC denizens), partial magazines, drink containers, bodies, medpens... they take a bit to despawn. Now, we're going to have components being scattered about, outside of stations, landing zones... It's just more garbage for the systems to have to keep track of. Do we get to sell them back for partial credit? Are we getting core charges like with car parts?

If these doesn't get addressed, and I can see us finding a ton more abandoned ships around stations and landing zones. All just to claim the ships so players don't have to buy the components, deal with carrying the extras (which do seem to snap to grids better in 4.5 ptu, but not super clean for all parts).

I'm excited for what some of engineering brings, but I'm also concerned with how this will impact general play. I don't want to see players discouraged from other aspects of play, and things that are just going to further hurt the servers.
