2004 4runner V6 4wheel Drive

Hey ,

I’m running into issues with the 4WD system on my 2004 4Runner. I know the common issue on 4th Gens is the transfer case actuator seizing up from lack of use, but I don't know if thats whats happening here.

Every month, I purposely put the truck into 4Hi and 4Lo once or twice a month to prevent it from freezing up. It has been working perfectly until now.

When I try to switch into 4WD, it just the lights do not show up on the dash, and it never actually engages.

What I’ve checked so far:

  • Fuses: Checked all relevant 4WD and ECU fuses; none are blown.
  • Connections: Checked the internal cabin connections and the switch itself. Everything looks plugged in and solid.
  • Control Panel: Visually inspected the 4WD control unit for any obvious burns or loose wires.

Since I use the system so frequently, I really doubt the actuator is seized. Has anyone experienced this where the actuator is fine but the system still fails? Could it be a position sensor on the transfer case or a bad ECU?

Any advice on what to check next or any fixes would be appreciated.

Thanks
