Favorite theory on how to become a vampire

I’ve been thinking of writting a vampire novel, but what troubles me the most is the transformation from a human to a vampire. A bite from a vampire would be to simple, I’m looking for something more complex to explain why not most of the population has been turned. (I apologize for any spelling mistakes, english isn’t my first language)
