Blind puppy with huge barking episodes/panic attacks?
My dad found a stray puppy in a ditch and rescued her. We’ve had her for around a month and took her to the vet a couple weeks ago, and they gave her shots, assessed her, and said she seemed healthy. They think she is around five months old and she is a black lab. They also determined that she is blind. Almost every day, she will have these episodes where she gets restless and barks for a long time and runs around/whips her body around like someone is attacking her. They typically last 10-30 minutes and she gets slightly calmed down when people talk to her and are with her but overall she gets incredibly worked up. She has a fast heartbeat, she’s panting and huffing, and walking around disoriented.
This behavior is frightening to me, because an irrational fear of mine is rabies, it is my biggest fear, and some part of me is scared that maybe she is showing symptoms and that the virus had been incubating and now she is starting to show signs of it, and the other half of me just thinks she is a traumatized blind puppy. It’s just very scary and I’m not sure if it’s psychological or what. However, she never gets violent or aggressive with us and has never hurt us intentionally, her sharp puppy teeth have cut us during play a few times though.
This whole situation with her has been hard for me because I’m the one who is with her most of the time since I am doing online classes and my parents work, and I never wanted this responsibility and don’t want a dog but I still care for her and want her to be happy and safe. I’m just scared that she’s sick or something and going to get us all killed because my parents immediately let her in our house without thinking it through.
Her next vet appointment is on this upcoming Monday. Has anyone experienced these types of episodes before with dogs? Are these signs of sickness, the vet said she looked healthy but I’m scared if some virus was incubating and hadn’t yet started to effect her until know. I’ve never dealt with a blind dog, or a dog with these types of episodes.
