Looking to buy my first Thinkpad

Buying Advice

Hi all,

I’m looking for some help picking the right ThinkPad as my main machine. Budget: roughly £2,500–£3,000 (can go higher if it’s genuinely worth it for longevity).

This will be my primary computer for the next several years, used for:

Work (productivity, lots of browser tabs, maybe some heavier/creative tasks over time)

Entertainment (media, streaming, day-to-day stuff)

Occasional gaming (I’m not chasing the absolute highest FPS but I don't mind getting highest. Visual clarity is more important for me)

On the gaming side: I’m totally fine with ~60 FPS-100 FPS and I don’t mind lowering settings over time, but I’d like something that can still handle 2025/2026 titles without instantly being locked to “low” everything. I care more about being able to keep playing future games comfortably than maxing out settings right now.

On the business side: I do a lot of work at the office mainly but I wish to expand my creativity and work with design, I will likely dabble in multiple fields of creativity and tinkering.

What I care about most:

Durability & build quality – I want something that feels solid and can handle daily use and travel AND WILL last.

Upgradability – ideally RAM and storage should be user-upgradable so I can extend the machine’s life if need be or repairable easily if need be.

Overall longevity – I don’t want something that feels outdated or cooked in 2 years.

Screen – I don’t really care about OLED/mini-LED, but I do want a crisp, visually appealing display with good brightness and decent colour.

Size – around 16"; I’m basically looking for a desktop replacement without going full 17"+ monster.

Big concern: thermals One thing that worries me is thermal performance. A lot of the reviews I’ve seen show some ThinkPad models hitting around 100°C under load, and that really concerns me in terms of long-term reliability and component lifespan. So I’m particularly interested in:

Models with good cooling and reasonable temps under sustained load Configs where the CPU/GPU aren’t constantly slamming into 100°C

Any tweaks (undervolting, fan curves, etc.) that are commonly done and safe on certain models

For people who know the ThinkPad lineup: Which series/models would you recommend for my use case? (P-series, T-series, X1 variants, etc.)

Any particular CPU/GPU combinations that balance performance, thermals, and longevity?

Any models or generations to avoid due to bad thermals, poor cooling, or reliability issues?

Real-world experiences, “if I were you I’d get X with Y specs”, or specific configs you’d suggest would be hugely appreciated. 🙏

Thanks in advance!
