illustrated childrens book with golden fruits and two girls

i remember an illustrated book from my childhood, which i loved back then but i just can’t seem to remember its name now. mum gave the book away to someone when we moved houses and its been on my mind since. i cant remember if the book was a selection of compiled childrens stories, or just this one specific story but the events goes as i remember it to be something like this; there where two young girls with a tree in their backyard with golden peaches (i think they were peaches. maybe apples? not sure) and they tried to reach them or something. if my memory is correct at the end they realised it was a dream??? or simply returned home. some other details include their mum, who left in the beginning of the story to return later, three illustrated scenes where 1. girls are running, 2. they are under the three, 3. their mum getting on a carriage. it was a rather short story. illustrations with a heavy emphasis on the golden colours, including the girls hair. i understand this entire description is very vague, but im posting it here in hopes that it might ring a bell in someone. it would make me very happy to learn the books name because it had an important part in my early childhood. the cover of the book was also mainly blue, with the golden fruits from the story on it.
