Is there an open source database for startups, VCs, and funding rounds?
I’m fundraising right now and finding reliable info is a mess. Funding round details are scattered across news sites, TechCrunch articles, founders’ blog posts, random VC announcements, and whatever pops up on social media.
I know there are paid platforms like Crunchbase, PitchBook, Dealroom, etc., but they get expensive fast. I’m wondering if there is any community driven or open source effort that tries to collect this data in one place. Something lightweight, not necessarily as comprehensive as the commercial tools, but still useful enough to understand what is happening in the market.
So far I have seen small projects and niche datasets here and there, but nothing close to an open alternative. Which makes sense, because data about startups, companies, people, and deals is largely proprietary, inaccessible, and unstructured.
Is anyone aware of an open database or community project that tries to solve this? Or anything even halfway decent that is not locked behind a big subscription paywall?
