Mom asking for $20k

Background: my mom is a good mom and she was the main parent for me growing up and always put my needs first. We’re both trying to save money now living with my grandma, and I have a full time job now with a 401k and am able to put money into savings each month.

However she did have me young and I guess wasn’t the most financially responsible but she didn’t spend her money on dumb stuff it was just putting the bills, groceries on credit cards etc.

I never knew she had this much debt, until a week ago. My grandfather from my dad’s side recently died and left me a good sum of money in a trust account around 90k. My original plan was not to touch this money and invest it.

However my mom is asking for me to give her 20k to clear her debt. She works two jobs they don’t pay amazing but she is actively trying to pay it off but it’s hard to catch up with interest. When she initially told me this I was quite mad. I didn’t take it out on her I just kept it inside. I know why she didn’t tell me, I get stressed with money and I try to be frugal as much as I can. But it just made me upset because I am finally in a place where I can get ahead financially and I’m worried this might deter that.

I love my mom and want to help how I can. I will probably give her the money because I want her to be in a good spot too but maybe I should just confirm we are financially aligned before, that if I give her this money she isn’t putting down all this money on credit cards. Has anyone been in a similar situation or delt with this before?
