Is calorie cycling "real" maintenance ?

Hi folks. So I'm currently two weeks into a diet break and I've been experimenting with calorie cycling instead of eating at maintenance every single day.

I find it so much easier to eat below my TDEE on training days when I'm burning way more calories, and then eat above my TDEE on rest days when I'm not as active. It all averages out over the week to maintenance.

This feels more sustainable to me than trying to hit my exact TDEE every single day, regardless of my activity level. On rest days I'm always running a surplus.

So far, I'm starting to feel way better and my performance in swimming and resistance training is starting to catch up, so my guess would be that it works. My weight is stable, I did gain 3 pounds but it's probably water and glycogen since I also upped my daily carbs by 50% (100g -> 150g). After that initial jump, weight has been holding steady. But I'm only two weeks in, so I'm curious about the long-term sustainability.

Has anyone else done this long-term ? Is this actually sustainable maintenance, or am I setting myself up for problems down the road ?
