Why is there any food left in Manousos' house when he comes back?

If the Hive is consolidating every single food resource they have, why is there any left for Manousos when he comes back home? You’d think they would’ve ransacked every single house and store across the world.

Unless… they knew that Manousos would be inspired to meet Carol after he watched her video, and immediately stockpiled some foodstuffs for him to eat and carry on his long journey. They even have his mother on standby to talk to him (I’m assuming that she likely wouldn’t have been anywhere near his home, because the Hive probably assigns tasks to its host bodies at random). Why would they even meet him in his mother’s body if not to push him further away from himself for whatever reason?

And yeah, I know that they say, “You must be feeling confused and hungry,” which is completely contrary to what I’m saying here, but honestly it just made me more confused**.** Maybe there is some deeper manipulation on the Hive’s part going on here, that I'm not picking up on?
