What happened to my brothers crime scene?

NSFW

Hi there, questions for crime scene cleaners.

My brother passed last year from a Fentanyl OD in his apartment, and wasn’t found until 5 days later by his neighbour. For reference he was an on and off addict, and we thought he had just been busy with work - He didn’t talk to us regularly.

The day after we found out, we had to go to his apartment to get some of his things and the scene was still left there. His apartment was full of trash, rotting food piled, gloves and what i assume was equipment left by the police on scene. Luckily one of my family members went in before my mother and I, because there was bodily fluid on the bed and floor that she had covered with a blanket and towel.

My question is, for decomp that has been sitting for 6 days (at that point) would the building owners be forced to throw out the bed along with redoing flooring?

  • His bed and furniture was issued with the apartment when he moved in. I guess it’s just curiosity as again, i didn’t see the worst of it.

Is it normal for police and investigators to tell the family to go and get their loved ones personal things when there’s still very visible fluid and blood on the scene?

Thank you.
