Is it ethical to imprison noncustodial parents for nonpayment of child support?

What is achieved by taking away completely their ability to earn money, and at the same time put taxpayers in the hook for the costs associated with their incarceration and entitlement benefits such as SNAP and Medicaid for their children? What are some more ethical alternatives?
