Thinking of an s60r
Currently I'm driving a base model 2012 focus with around 135k miles (5spd, not the DCT) that has been very reliable for me for the past 8-ish years. Assuming no accidents it should last me another 5 years or more.
But... I really like everything about the 1st gen s60r from the understated styling to the turbo I5. I live in the northeast United States so the AWD would be nice to have in the snow. I see the s60r going for a pretty reasonable price; currently I've been eyeing up a 2005 s60r that's listed on cars and bids. There are however a few things that I want to ask to other owners/enthusiasts:
1.) are these cars really that expensive to maintain if I am able to do most of the work myself and have a spare car? I've also seen people saying that these can be a pain to work on, is that true? Most of my mechanic experience has been on base focus, focus st, and mustangs.
2.) I see somethings about block cracking, transfer case gear going bad, and issues with the suspension. How common is this? For what it's worth, I don't plan on driving it hard, it would just be used as a daily driver.
3.) Do I wait until my focus takes a crap in a few years or should I buy one sooner than later? These are really cool cars but I wonder if they'll take off in price like more popular enthusiast cars did like the s2000 or Miata.
I'll be graduating with an engineering degree soon and I'd love to finally buy a fun car, so I'd like to get your advice before making a big financial decision. I'm expecting there will be a few grand of repairs since these cars are getting up there in age. Also, I don't plan on selling my focus. Thanks in advance!
