How to download pdf books on my ipad

Hey! I like reading from the apple books app but the choices are very limited and I really wanna save some money by not purchasing the physical copies. I also love reading on my ipad and would appreciate it if you could give me tips on how I can safely save book pdfs on my ipad and read it on the book app. Thank you in advance!
