Nepal's overdependence on trade with India hurting our currency? Time to diversify trade and rethink peg?

Discussion/बहस

Since India is our largest trading partner, NPR is pegged to INR. Our USD rate rises whenever INR weakens. Recently, INR has become one of the worst-performing major currencies in the world, making everything we import even more expensive.

Because of Nepal's dependence on India for trade and currency stability, we have almost zero monetary independence. Any economic shock to India hits Nepal instantly.

Shouldn't we be diversifying our trade towards China, Bangladesh, and other markets, gradually reduce dependence on India, and rethink the NPR-INR peg so that our currency's value doesn't depend on another country's performance?
