The depiction of non-white characters in Pluribus is racist
The hivemind is extremely bad at simulating real people. They are incapable of lying, showing negative emotions, and cannot withstand having negative emotions directed at it. They have an inconsistent at best approach to social cues (giving Carol a grenade when she was being sarcastic). Even when explicitly instructed to pretend (in Episode 6), they have to be reminded to roleplay.
Just try to imagine for a moment, your wife/husband/partner being incorporated into this hivemind, and having all of the above characteristics. Is there even a shred of doubt in your mind that you wouldn't IMMEDIATELY recognize that this is no longer the same person in any meaningful sense? Yet, we are expected to believe that 100% of the people of color remaining on earth, instantly and unfailingly accept this new version of their loved ones, and have no desire to bring back their old selves. Laxmi doesn't mind that her son can no longer cry or throw a tantrum. The Mongolian man doesn't care that his wife no longer gets sarcasm and doesn't have her old personality. The show stretches this to an absurd degree - not only do these people not find anything wrong with their new circumstances, we're supposed to believe that they are genuinely confused that anyone else would!
The reason why many of viewers accept the suspension of disbelief this requires is because these characters are presented as Asian (Chinese, Mongolian, Indian). It is NOT a coincidence that the only characters who want to resist the hive is a white American and a mestizo Latin American. If this show consisted of only white American characters, the irrational behavior of the non-Carol characters would become manifestly absurd. But because these characters are foreigners, many viewers either consciously or sub-consciously accept 'it makes sense that the Chinese lady doesn't mind being part of the hive mind, that's how THEY are!'
This is a repost, my earlier post was deleted for some reason. I'm happy to read critiques, but would appreciate it if you start by refuting my central points: 1. the non-Western characters in this show accept the hive taking over their loved ones in a manner which is irrational and unhuman-like. 2. This acceptance is based on racial tropes of Asian conformity/lack of individuality.
