Air Pods Pro 2 Charge Irratically

My Air Pod Pro 2 are just over a year old so out of warranty.

What is occurring is that sometimes - and seemingly for no reason - one Air Pod will charge normally and the other won't charge at all.

I won't discover this until I try to use them and find that one ear is completely dead.

There doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason as sometimes they both charge normally and placing the buds in the charging case is pretty idiot proof because they just go in without one having to make them fit.

This morning one bud was *dead* and I put them back in the charging case and now the dead one is charging based on how much charge it shows when I check its status with my iPhone - e.g. case open and held to the iPhone.

This happened to my prior set but those were within warranty and so after Apple did some over the internet diagnostic they replaced them in warranty.

Does someone have insight into why this is happening - and to only one. As I said there doesn't seem to be a correlation with how I actually put them in the charging case because there really isn't a way not to put them in correctly.
