Phantom FGR.2: I don't get it

How do I play this thing? It's one of my worst performing vehicles in a long time. I thought it would get better when I got the AIM-7E, but I still can't get kills, my missiles never connect. I would rather play the mig-21bis uptiered to 12.0 than this piece of crap.
