Managing narcolepsy with other disorders
I have always fell asleep very easily. Ive heard stories from when i was little that i fell asleep in the pool. I had fell asleep in the middle of an exam while writing something mid-sentence. Fell asleep in a crowded restaurant. I always fall asleep in class through out high school. In church since forever, like within 2 minutes of sitting down. No matter what i do, coffee, prior naps before my service (i go to a morning service, so i woke up earlier, get ready, try to tire myself out, then take a nap and wake up as close as the service time as possible), go to different service time, even had a lollipop, but ive only ever succeeded like a handful of times (ard 5 times)
Last semester i felt like the sleeping is interfering too much with my study so i went to a neurologist/neurosurgeon. He ordered mri to rule out other condition, told me it was narcolepsy.
The thing is, i also have ocd. And he said its probably the ocd medications. He said i probably have some underlying condition, but the ocd meds is exacerbating it. He told me to talk to my psychiatrist to lower down the medication
I talked to my psychiatrist, and he didnt believed me🙄🙄 he said that it was a very rare diagnosis, he ended up lowering the dose after i insisted bc i couldnt go on. But then he asked me, oh do u have cataplexy? Because narcolepsy diagnosis needs cataplexy. I did not know what cataplexy was. Then he explained. I said no, and i felt he kinda did not believe me but lower the dose anyways.
But after i got out of the room. DAMN I REALIZED SOMETHING. I’ve always been known in my family to be someone who falls ALL THE TIME. Like there was a period where I’d have a falling injury every month. I used to always have first aid kit for fall injuries. And any time someone fell they would ask me what to do cause im known for falling down all the time.
Moving on, i was too scared to say that to my doctor (idk why im just anxious to tell him). Then after awhile i changed doctor cause i finally got an appointment at the public hsopital. On my second visit my doctor wanted to increase the dose again, i said no, but he insisted, and after awhile of back an forth, i finally gave up.
I followed the prescription for 3 days before i stopped because the sleepiness was very debilitating. I would fall asleep while standing in the middle of my lab session. But my next appointment is in 3 months. Im currently taking half of my dose (which is less than the orginial dose) so the ocd is flaring up, (but not that bad)
Yea so now im stuck with 1 doctor telling me to lower the dose for my ocd meds, and the other wanting to increase the ocd meds🫠
