I don’t know what to think
Ok. I’ve accepted the fact that in this day and age the majority of customers flat-out don’t tip. Current culture, financial ability, general “cheapness,” whatever the reason. I RARELY do local drives. I’m in a rural market, so most of my rides are an hour out so into a metro area. I may only do two or three trips a day to meet my financial goal, or sometimes none at all. Almost all the local offers that pop up for me pay around $5 or $10, but the pickup location typically is at least 20 minutes drive time just to the pickup, so I almost have to decline because there’s no way I can RELY on a tip. Hopefully there’s another driver nearby who can take the offer. Maybe I’m jaded. Maybe I’m still holding a grudge against the dude who smelled like cigarette butts and made me listen to the Grateful fucking Dead for an hour and didn’t tip. That’s a black mark on Spotify wrapped that I’ll never live down. This morning, after being online for about an hour and a half, ONE request came in…for $6 and some change. Normally I wouldn’t think twice about rejecting it and waiting it out for something better…maybe even a halfway decent UberEats delivery. But it was only a few minutes away, and it was a five minute drive to the mall movie theatre, then back to my location, so I took it. As I was almost to the pickup, I heard the notification…”rider updated location.” Of COURSE. Now what ELSE is going to go wrong? So I go to the pickup, customer gets in, but my app isn’t showing me the new location yet. I ask “so I saw we were heading to the movie theater, but it updated?” Customer replied that yes, that was the original plan but the mall wasn’t actually going to be open yet, so they were heading to a restaurant instead. As we’re doing some casual chit-chat about movies, I mention that I was looking forward to making time in the next few days to see the Kill Bill 4 1/2 hour super-cut. A few more minutes of brief conversation, we get to the restaurant drop off, say our closing pleasantries, and I head back to my “home base” location down the road. By the time I put my car into park, I got the notification that I’d received a tip…on this initial $6 ride, I have no idea what the customers end bill was with the updated location…but the tip was $16. Enough to cover the movie ticket. To hell with ignoring thirty more Walmart package deliveries. I’m logging off the Uber app for today and I’m gonna watch Kill freaking Bill.
