automated pointillism, or AI?

I'm making a custom laptop sticker for my MacBook. I've been editing out the text of hundreds of album covers and want to arrange them in a grid, ideally in some sort of pattern. I've figured out how to make a "Contact Sheet", from the File menu, Automate, which creates a grid in alphabetical order.

Does Photoshop have any way to arrange each of the 300 .psd files not by alphabetical order, but maybe by the dominant color, or brightness? I don't expect to have enough squares to make an actual pointillistic picture, but even just a rainbow would be cool. If not in Photoshop, does anyone know of an AI service that could arrange them? Bonus points if I can keep the individual album covers as .psd and not export each one to an image file.
