Why has trans been SO popular for the past 5-10ish years?
When I came out as gay in 2006 I had seen almost nothing about trans people, and I felt weird just for being gay. It caused a lot of issues with family, my school, I got death threats-... only 20 years ago, for being openly gay, when I had seen maybe a handful of openly gay people online or in movies/shows.
What I'm getting at is... at what point did trans become something people were so open about, to the point where in queer spaces it's such an assertive and clearly represented force? What happened to make so many people feel comfortable transitioning, talking about being trans or thinking they're trans. Because pre-2010 or maybe 2015, it wasn't something I ever heard about, online, among open-minded friends, in queer spaces... it just wasn't there at all, or if it was it was something kept very very quiet.
I've followed some of the representation. I know there was a trans character in Supergirl. I know shows like The Fosters and it's spin off Good Trouble had some solid trans rep. Then there's the success of RPDR and the evolution of trans rep on that show. Glee, Pose, Fox's Rocky Horror reboot... but was that all it took? Was I just not paying attention pre-2015 or was there something bigger that happened that really lifted up / embolded / gave a voice and face to the trans community around that time, that encouraged a lot more people to see themselves as trans?
