Worried my neighbor (a vet) is harming his dogs what can I do?
I’ve never made a Reddit post before, so excuse me if I’m not explaining this perfectly, but I really need advice.
My neighbor is a veterinarian and owns several dogs, both small and large. He’s always seemed… off. Not in a quirky way, but in a “stay away from him” way. He’s been predatory toward some of the women in the neighborhood once he even insisted a woman come inside his house to see his “decorations,” which she obviously refused.
He often offers to help neighbors with their pets, giving very cheap or even free medication when their dogs are sick. One neighbor had two dogs with infections and bad coughs. He gave her pills for free. Many of us felt she shouldn’t take them, but she couldn’t afford treatment otherwise. Her dogs seem fine now, but that isn’t the reason I’m making this post.
For the past 2–3 weeks, his dogs have been making noises of pain throughout the day and night, genuine screams that are honestly frightening. My bedroom window faces his patio, so I hear everything. I’ve woken up at 3–5 AM because of the noises, and it’s gotten to the point where I’m extremely worried and almost in tears because it sounds so painful.
I confronted him and asked why his dogs were screaming, and he said, “They’re just fighting and they like to play.” But I keep waking up at around 4 AM, and although I can’t see much, I hear his footsteps whenever the dogs start screaming.
I’ve tried looking into who I could call to check on the situation, but I live in a country where these issues aren’t taken seriously. I asked someone close to me whether the police could do a welfare check, but they said the police usually ignore these kinds of complaints.
My gut is telling me something is very wrong, and I feel like I have to do something. What steps can I take to verify what’s happening with his dogs?
