Herbin 1670 and 1798 special edition inks: clogging/problems?
Hi all,
I’m a newbiew fountain pen owner who bought some J. Herbin anniversary inks: specifically, the Violet Imperial and the 1798 Diamant Bleu. I haven’t opened the Diamant yet, but I did ink up a rather expensive Montblanc pen with the Violet. It writes so smoothly and is very (very) pretty. While writing when it, I noticed that it has a lovely shimmer. Which only then, because I’m a newbie, triggered me to think “Wait: didn’t I read something about not using shimmer inks in fancy piston-filler pens?” So, down the research rabbit hole I went, from which I’ve gathered from posts here and else that such shimmer inks can cause clogging and are hard to clean; and that if you use such inks, you should shake the bottle well before inking a pen (I did that); not let the pen sit unused for an extended period of time (check: I’ve been using it daily since filling); and clean it more often than normal (I don’t know what “normal” is, but most of what I read suggested cleaning it out thoroughly with water and nib cleaner “every couple of weeks” when using shimmer inks. I have no problem doing that.)
Here’s my question(s):
Assuming that I follow the steps above, what problems could nonetheless arise; how likely are those problems; and are there other steps you can take to prevent them? Or, alternatively, are the risks sufficiently likely and sufficiently major that I should just clean the ink out of this pen now? On the one hand, I’ll definitely do so if it’s advisable; on the other hand, I’d hate to do so because this ink is soooooo smooth and pretty. (I’ve been using Montblanc and Iroshizuku inks in my other pens; while those are very very good, I’ve been blown away by the Herbin Violet. In a perfect world, I’d not only keep it in the current pen but also use others of the Herbin special edition ink in some of my other pens. But not if the cost is causing damage to the pen or creating a problem I can’t fix, such as clogging that can’t be resolved without disassembling the pen, which I can’t and wouldn’t do.)
Thanks for any advice!
