Is there a way to survive max difficulty without those terrain hacks?

All the guides I find imply that you need to create those ridiculous vertical mountains.
I tried maps with a single access point like an island with a bridge but I'm still defeated when they come with catapults, especially when the game randomly spawns a raid impossible to defeat, like 10x bigger than my own army.
