Car rental in Dublin - for locals

Bloody car gave up the ghost there right before the holidays and I need something to drive about in for the next few weeks. I don't have a credit card just a debit which seems to be a sticking point with some of these rentals. Can anyone share experience or recommendations of who to go with or should I just sort myself out a credit card. I also noticed the prices seem significantly cheaper if your American rather than local...?
