I want to mark a single word in bold in a text element that has a style

AI says I should just mark the word and then select Bold, even though I said that the fields for font, typeface, size, etc. disappear when selecting a style. Is there a way to do this, like a character style in InDesign? Or do I have to create a second style with Bold for this text?
