Baby steps

Last night I hit 9 days sober. I met up with some coworkers for our usual quarterly dinner and drinks. There are usually 8 to 10 of us, and historically myself and one other coworker are the heaviest drinkers. Because I live 30 plus miles away, I normally limit myself to two drinks spread over four to five hours.

This time I ordered iced tea, and I noticed the coworker who drinks like me was also drinking tea, his hot. When the others started ordering more drinks, someone asked if I wanted anything. I just said no because I’m on call this weekend. They said okay and moved on.

If I were with my non-work friends and didn’t drink, someone would have made a big deal about it or asked what was wrong with me.

The crazy part is I didn’t even want to drink last night. The thought didn’t cross my mind. Normally after these dinners, I would head to my local bar and get absolutely obliterated.

I’m taking things one baby step at a time, and I’m hoping I can leave this disease in my rear view mirror.
