Just need to vent.

Some backstory about myself and the situation.

In July, I was really struggling to pay rent on time, so I finally caved and started looking to get a roommate. I’m personally not fond of living with strangers, but nonetheless, let’s fast-forward to September (it took two months because he wanted to spend time with his grandmother, who was on her deathbed). The new roommate arrives with two months’ notice and planning to save money for the upcoming move.

He brings his fiancée with him without letting me know, and she lives in the apartment for a month—not the plan whatsoever. It was supposed to be just him. Normally, that isn’t a huge deal, but they were filthy people: no showers, no taking out the trash, no cleaning up after themselves—just gross. On top of that, he had no money saved up, so he was late paying for his first month by 15 days.

After a month of letting the fiancée squat at the apartment, I tell the roommate, “Hey man, she needs to start providing for bills as well, or she needs to go back to Louisiana.” She’s taken back to Louisiana.

Near the end of October, he gets a job at Amazon and gets settled in. He pays rent on time—good things. Life and finances are looking better, you would think. Well, he wants to be added to my lease now that the fiancée is gone. I tell him, “Sure, no problem. I’ll let my office know, and they’ll send you an email to apply.” He never applies. Then maybe two weeks before the month ends, he says, “I went apartment hunting, and I’m moving into a different apartment on the 1st of December.” Good for him, but some notice would have been nice, you know? So I could be prepared for his departure.

So he still owes for the final month he lived in the apartment—utilities, internet, and half the rent.

Events that occurred before he left: a flat tire and his grandma’s condition getting worse.

He replaces the flat tire, then all four tires, and gets extra work done on the vehicle, which I kinda understand—you’ve gotta keep your vehicle maintained. What’s frustrating is he knows he owes someone $700+, and instead of getting the one new tire he needed, he spends $500 on four new tires. Which I understand is important in most cases because it keeps tread levels the same all around and prevents potential issues with the vehicle. But if you owe someone money, large or small, you would think a person would plan accordingly with their debts.

Anyway, he paid me $100 today on the 7th. He’s going back to Louisiana on the 8th because his grandmother is not looking good, and he doesn’t know how long he’ll be there or when he can get me the remaining funds owed.

In my head, I think I’m not going to get the rest of the money at all, or it’s going to be extremely late, because he has his own apartment to worry about now as well.

And yes, I should have an emergency savings fund for situations like this to make sure bills are always paid. But I’ve been living paycheck to paycheck on my own for the last year, and with my own debts I already pay on top of that, things have just been hard as is and was finnaly starting to save accordingly to the bills being 50% less.

is there anything I should say to this person about this money or just bite the bullet and wait till money is given eventually or never at all.
