How common was it for stepchildren to be listed as a separate family unit on a census in 1850?

I'm doing research on a family line and noticed that in the 1850 Census, two stepchildren were listed separately but they lived together with their mother, stepfather, and two half siblings. This was in Louisiana, if it matters.
