I TOLD my mom Im I wanted to consult profrossional for my ADHD

A few days ago, my mom and I had a conversation. I told her that I wanted to see a psychiatrist to get consulted for my ADHD and, if needed, to start medication. She asked me why, and I explained that I want to function better— as an adult, as a person, and as an individual. I’ve been struggling for years without medication, and it has been really difficult.

She responded by saying that my “anxiety” would only get worse if I pursued this. I told her that it doesn’t work like that, and I mentioned that I had already found a doctor and a hospital. When I told her which hospital it was, she immediately said, “Don’t go there, that place is bad,” even though she had no real experience or knowledge about it. I actually know several people who consult the same doctor, so I trust that choice.

By the end of our conversation that morning, she said, “We’re going to think about it.” The way she said it made it sound like she had the final say, as if she had decision-making power over what I want to do.

Later, we exchanged texts. She suddenly changed her tone and said, “Okay, but we’ll go together.” I told her no— that I can handle it, and I prefer to go by myself. But she kept insisting on being involved. I tried to stay firm and made it clear that she doesn’t need to come with me. It felt like she wanted to control the process, maybe even the medication I might take.

And I understand her. She’s my mom. She’s worried, and she cares. But this is something I’ve wanted for a long time. I want to finally get proper help so I can function better as an adult. I don’t want her to control this part of my life.

She also said that I would become “dependent” on ADHD medication. And honestly—yes. I will depend on it to function, because my brain doesn’t produce enough dopamine or certain chemicals on its own. That’s exactly why medication exists. That’s how I can live a functional, stable life.

I understand her concern. I appreciate that she cares. But the decisions about my mental health are mine to make. I’ve suffered for so many years. And now that I’m finally stepping up and doing something about it, I can’t let someone else take over or control what happens next. I’ve struggled for too long. And I’m finally choosing to help myself.
