Ssi and live in caregiver

Can you get ssi disability and still work as a live in caregiver with out the pay effecting your disability and ssi benefits? My client says it didn't effect one of their past live in caregivers who was getting ssi and their live in caregiver. I don't really believe them. Or things could have changed since this was almost 5yrs ago.
