AIO Found out a new friend is intentionally giving her dogs marijuana

I don’t even know what to do about this. This person and I weren’t strangers, but they were a distant family friend for awhile that I recently moved into the area of, so we’ve been hanging out more and chatting. She’s going through a lot so I didn’t mind spending time helping her through her feelings and such. I can tell she’s in a very fragile place mental health wise, and it’s largely due to all of the chaos in her home. To put it bluntly, she is the mother in a very abusive family dynamic (dad is abusive, now kids are following in his steps).

The reason this is relevant is because on top of the insanity happening in her house (doors being ripped off, holes being punched in walls etc), she also has about 6 dogs and 3 cats.

I recently visited her home for the first time and it was honestly too stressful for me to even sit there for more than 20 minutes so I can’t even imagine how stressful it is for the dogs and especially the cats. One of her cats immediately crawled into my arms and cling to me the entire time I was there. The poor thing was tapping its tail the whole time because the dogs were barking and fighting right next to us, it was loud and chaotic.

Well all of that aside, as I was fixing something in her car, she casually mentioned that she’s been giving two of her dogs marijuana to “help with their anxiety”. Now I’m no expert on holistic pet medicine, but I’m pretty sure you’re not supposed to just DIY dose your pets with drugs created for humans.

I very gently recommended that she talk to a vet about all of it, as her excuse was that “it’s natural” so nothing could be bad about it. I told her I’m pretty sure animals can overdose on weed and she said “well, no, it would take so much, more than you could ever smoke” and I explained yeah, that’s true for humans but I don’t know about dogs. Animals are different, their bodies are much smaller and process things differently.

Anyway I’m kind of at a loss of what to do. I feel like she just admitted to animal abuse to me and I don’t know if I should call animal control or something. What would you do? Am I overreacting?
