What do you guys think about popular brands?

I am new about pens. Mainly I see myself as a collector. And I would like to learn your opinions about the popular brands to see which one should I consider to buy. Pelikan, montegrappa, pilot, aurora, visconti, cross, diplomat, dupont, lamy, parker, platinum, sheaffer, waterman etc.
