Is a MRI or ultrasound required for painless typical presenting forehead lipoma? Experiences welcome
My son, age 30, has a medium size forehead lipoma for the past 4-5 years. Once it showed up, it hasn’t grown nor is it painful. We have a family history of lipomas, with myself, my adult daughter, and my father all having them removed without concern. Mine was on my lower back, lobulated and close to the spine, so I needed an MRI. Mine did return 15 years later (2012) was removed again without a MRI and so far so good. No issues from any of our family’s lipomas.
Anyway, my son keeps going to the primary doctor instead of the plastic surgeon, against my advice. They keep referring him for blood work and now an MRI. His insurance is awful and all of this is out of pocket, so I’m really questioning if a MRI is necessary. From my understanding not MRI needed unless the lipoma is deep in the body, painful or fast growing- mine was deep and near the spine so a MRI was warranted.
But my sons is on his forehead and seems pretty straightforward. I keep telling him to go right to the plastic surgeon, but he kept returning to the primary doctor never following following thru with any surgery. It’s tooo a lot of convincing, but he finally agreed to schedule with a plastic surgeon and to skip the mri unless the plastic surgeon refers him. My questions what’s everyone elses experience with a forehead lipoma removal? preop stuff
