Is it possible for a therapist to tell me they won’t report me for something I disclosed and then go back on their word?
A few weeks ago I disclosed to my therapist something that I never thought I would be ready to tell them in fear of them having to report it. I’ve done research for reporting laws in my state and have found it’s kind of a gray area.
I’ve seen other therapist profiles for my state and they mention that they would be inclined to report (or I think) my situation, but before I disclosed to my therapist I talked with them about what she is inclined to report and she said the exact opposite of what another therapist in my state had mentioned online. I’ve also seen similar situations online and there were therapists that said it didn’t have to be reported and some said it had to be.
Regardless, they told me that they weren’t going to report it, but I worry that they are just telling that to me to make me feel better and they are secretly going to report it, or they are going to ask me more next session and find out something that they will have to report even though I’ve told them pretty much everything.
Can therapists lie about that?
