I don’t recognise myself anymore. My habits built someone I never meant to become.
I don’t even know when it started, honestly like the kind where you tell yourself it’s fine, it’s just today, I’ll get back on track tomorrow. And then you blink and somehow that same “tomorrow” has been happening for months. I woke up today and genuinely felt like… who even is this version of me? Because it’s definitely not the person I thought I’d be by now, and it’s weirdly painful admitting that.
And I hate how subtle it was. Like you don’t realise you’re slipping because nothing huge is happening you’re just slowly replacing effort with comfort, replacing presence with distraction. And suddenly your whole routine feels like it belongs to someone else.
And I kept convincing myself I was “busy” or “tired” or “I’ll fix it next week.” But the truth is I wasn’t doing anything meaningful, I was just avoiding the discomfort of actually changing. And now I feel like I’ve drifted so far from myself that even trying to come back feels embarrassing, like I shouldn’t have let it get this bad in the first place. It’s this gross mix of shame and confusion and this weird grief for the person I thought I was going to become.
What’s hitting me the hardest is realising that the version of me right now didn’t appear because of one big mistake it happened because of hundreds of tiny choices I didn’t even notice myself making. Man u name it and my shit a$$ routine would have it from sleeping late, procrastinating, numbing myself with random distractions, constantly saying later, constantly escaping instead of facing anything head-on… it all added up. And it made me into someone I don’t really recognise or even feel connected to.
And I guess the part that fucks me up is knowing that I built this version of me. Like, no one else did this. It wasn’t a bad relationship or a traumatic event or some crisis. It was literally just me, choosing the easier thing every day. And it feels weirdly lonely admitting that you’re the reason you lost yourself.
But at the same time and this is the only hopeful thing in this whole mess if I created this version of me through a thousand small choices, then maybe I can un-create it the same way. Not with some dramatic life overhaul, not with a perfect routine or some motivational bullshit… just by slowly choosing different things, even if it feels stupid and tiny at first.
Anyway, I just needed to get this out because bottling it has been making me feel weird and disconnected. It’s exhausting pretending you're fine when you're very clearly not fine. And if anyone else is going through this the slow, quiet losing-yourself thing I hope you know you’re not alone. It actually happens way more quietly than people talk about.
TL;DR: I’ve slowly turned into a version of myself I never intended to be, not because of one big event but because of tiny habits and constant avoidance, and I’m trying to figure out how to rebuild myself gently and intentionally before more of my life slips by.
