Do we need to privatise (or decentralise) IPRS, PPL, ISAMRA etc?
From an India perspective, monopoly societies like IPRS and PPL feel increasingly unfit for today’s music economy. They’re legally empowered, yet royalty collection remains disproportionately low for a market of this size, distributions are slow and opaque, and independent artists often see little to nothing.
With no competition or real exit option, there’s very little pressure to improve efficiency, transparency, technology or enforcement. In an era where streaming platforms provide granular usage data and global societies are becoming more tech-driven, India still locked into a closed, monopoly mode. Wouldn’t multiple licensed, privately run collecting entities under strict regulation better serve creators? Curious how labels, publishers, and admins outside India view this kind of system.
