HP desktop won’t detect USB installer (Debian)

Question/Problem

Hi,

I’m trying to create a bootable USB of Debian 12 on my HP desktop (currently running openSUSE), but my HP firmware refuses to detect the USB no matter what I do.

Here’s the situation:

  • USB created with Rufus, tested in both ISO mode and DD mode
  • USB formatted as FAT32
  • In the HP UEFI boot menu, nothing appears (completely empty)
  • I tried with Secure Boot ON/OFF
  • Tried with Legacy/CSM ON/OFF
  • Still no USB device detected

The USB itself is fine: openSUSE GRUB sees it as (hd1,gpt1) and it contains EFI/boot/bootx64.efi

But the HP boot menu never shows it as a boot option

So I cannot boot Debian installer because HP UEFI refuses to list the USB, even though it’s bootable.

Has anyone experienced this with HP desktops?

Is there a known workaround to make HP recognize Debian boot USBs?

Thanks!
