can my family's current home be eligible for section 8 housing?
my parents pay $3,000 in monthly rent for our 2 bedroom in nassau county. they are using their savings for now, but are hoping to find a solution and they most definitely are eligible for section 8 (low income, eligible for social security benefits, disability, senior citizens, etc). i am currently living with them but plan on leaving for medical school in a year.
is there a way to get the current place we live in to be eligible for section 8?
(even though im leaving the house in a year, my parents NEED a 2 bedroom. my dad suffers from chronic insomnia. my mom and i have to share a bedroom because of this.)
we live in a multifamily home (idk if it's registered/complies with zoning laws tbh). each floor of the house is divided and has separate entrances. we live on the first floor (another family in second floor and another in basement). the place is very nice and everything is up-to-date. it would definitely pass inspections and all that.
our landlord is very nice, but isn't the best at english. i was planning on completing the paperwork for him anyway. based on our relationship with him, i think the chances of him saying yes are high (especially bc i'll be doing most of the paperwork). the only issue is that idk if he registered the home for multi-family zoning. is there a way to find out, without asking him? or any tell-tale signs? i know the best way to find out is by asking him, but i don't even want to bring up section 8 housing unless i know the home is a legal multi-family home.
