I believe in private property, but I’m very opposed to the exploitation of labor. What am I?
I tried posting this in r/askpolitics to get a broader perspective, but it was removed. I tried to post it on r/politicaldiscusson but their posting rules are so strict I can’t figure out how to get through at all. So here I am.
First, I’m in the US so a lot of my beliefs hinge on what I think is possible to achieve from the starting point of peak capitalism. I’d probably have different ideas if I could build a system from scratch (step one: fewer people in smaller communities).
My core belief, to sum it up in one sentence, is that individuals should be able to accumulate wealth and personal property, but that they should not be able to extract that wealth from other people’s labor.
I believe that owning businesses is not inherently wrong, and is even necessary, as long as everyone is compensated fairly for their labor. If you own a business that’s your job, and there is a fair wage (possibly even a high wage) for that job. But maximizing profit by exploiting workers for their labor is theft. Humans have gotten where we are because of specialization of skills, and businesses, including being freely able to choose which to work for, are integral to that. But I also believe that business owners (humans in general) are nearly always going to default to greed. A bunch of greedy companies with limited regulations are going to always result in a greedy system where workers only have the illusion of choice. In small communities people can be kept mostly good through networks of social trust, but once communities get bigger (large towns, cities and countries) strong regulations are the only way to keep businesses from becoming exploitative.
I strongly believe that the job of the government is to create regulations, I’m very much on the side of big government, but I do not believe that it should own or operate businesses. This is where I usually run into the most conflict in leftist spaces, I’m solidly not into communism. I don’t mind the government owning land, in the sense that public land should exist, but I don’t believe it should be able to buy or sell it in the same way an individual or corporation can.
I think that the entire category of what we call “identity politics” can be dealt with without ever talking about identity. I’m lgbtq+ and have some real strong opinions here, I just think the government should stay in their lane. They can regulate against discrimination without making lists of groups. People should all be equal in the eyes of the government.
To me my ideas seem very common sense, but I definitely don’t fit on the right and I also don’t feel like I fit on the far left or in the center.
