NSFWAsking a Question

i had a pilonidal absess in 2023 which i got an I&D done at an urgent care. felt a lot of relief and had really no problems until a few days ago. now i have so many questions about what happened the first time.

when i went to urgent care for drainage, they used lidocaine, which was very painful going in since i was so inflamed in the area. the NP doing the procedure told me that sometimes lidocaine doesnt work for this procedure, and continued to do the procedure without me being numb or given any type of pain management. i basically had to just scream expletives to get through the pain. is that normal? or was she just not experienced in this?

i also am now wondering if she was supposed to tell me to follow up with my doctor or a referral to a specialist, because from what i understand now, incision and drainage is not an actual treatment for pilonidal disease, its just to get the infection from the abscess gone. should i have had this looked at sooner?

i have an appointment with my doctor on monday, and hopefully they can resolve this. with this being my second abscess, what kind of treatment should i be expecting to actually get to the root of the problem?

TIA!
