Is splitting up bonded sister/brother cats a bad idea?
About a year and a half ago I asked my roommate if we could adopt 2 cats and wed both keep one. I found them from my coworker and we fostered them. They were adopted together as kittens and have lived together their entire lives. They play, groom each other, and seem clearly bonded.
Our lease is ending and we’re both moving to different places, I’m moving across the country and she’s moving locally. We’re trying to decide whether to keep them together or separate them.
A few key details:
- They’ve never been apart.
- The sister is very high-energy and needy; the brother is calmer and more independent.
- One person currently handles most responsibilities (vet visits, food/litter, daily care, and costs).
- If separated, both cats would still be in stable, loving homes.
- If kept together, one person would take both. OP is the one who mainly handles responsibilities and would like to keep them, but nervous about how to approach the situation
My questions: How stressful is it to separate bonded siblings after a year? Do cats usually adapt fine, or does it cause long-term issues? In situations like this, is it generally better to prioritize keeping them together?
Really want to do what’s best for them. Has anyone had experience with this or a pet breakup?
