Yuji's depression is slightly exaggerated by the fandom

Manga Discussion

From comments on the sub-reddit and youtube videos, it seems that some people view Yuji as feeling nothing but sadness ever since he realized he was immortal. I disagree with this pov because it goes against Yuji's character.

Yuji represents the best parts of humanity. The kindness, optimism and compassion that comes from it. This is extremely evident all throughout jjk, and from the few panels about Yuji we have in modulo it seems that he hasn't changed much personality wise. Yuji being nothing but depressed in modulo doesn't make sense to me because Yuji has always been a "glass half full" type of person. I'm not denying that Yuji is depressed at the fact that he will outlive everyone he knows, what I'm saying is that I don't think that would prevent him from appreciating the beauty of life. Yuji would 100% cherish the moments he had with those he loved, and still find enjoyment out of things like watching movies, its just that its going to be too a lesser degree. This makes sense for Yuji's character because 1.He is incredibly steadfast in his beliefs (which is highlighted during shinjuku and that famous "If its just pain, Yuji will not stop") and 2. because we see something similar with Sukuna, when Yuji offers to spare him in exchange for Megumi, and after Sukuna dies where Yuji believes that they can live together despite all that he has done. Its very clear that Yuji has an optimistic outlook on life, and that doesn't seem to have changed very much, so it doesn't make sense to me how people view him as unable to feel anything but grief. I'm not denying that Yuji wouldn't be at least somewhat depressed at the fact that he's unable to fulfill his grandpa's last wishes, but Yuji wouldn't let that thought be the ONLY thing in his mind and the story has told us time and time again that he won't. To boil Yuji down into nothing but a flesh sack of sadness completely mis-characterizes him in my opinion.
