From dashes and dots in 1844 to the launch of social sites in 1980, social media platforms have come a long way. In the current generation, social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter, Youtube , Instagram, etc, have amassed billions of users. These platforms have revolutionized how people communicate, share information and express themselves. However, the platforms have also caused problems such as declining mental health, increase in cyberbullying and online harassment, violations of privacy and the increase at which misinformation is disseminated. This has raised a question, Should social media platforms be regulated by the government? Many people opposed the idea as the government regulations could suppress the first amendment. However, government regulation could help to reduce the declining mental health, the increase in cyberbullying and harassment, violations of privacy and the spread of misinformation.
